Ultimately
our aim is to raise as much money for the following charities as possible; ideally we would like to raise £10,000 but we would love to break this target if
at all possible.
These are
the three charities we are supporting;
- The Lotus Children’s Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
- The Wiltshire Air Ambulance
- The Leicester Hospital Charities (Glenfield Heart)
All three
are important and valuable centres of support in their respective communities and all desperately need as much support as
we can give them.
All monies
raised will be split equally between the charities; we have already been in touch with them and they are more than happy with
this – as a charity they are very appreciative of ANY help they can get.
Please help us and them!
The Lotus
Children’s Centre, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
www.lotuschild.org
·
The Lotus Children’s Centre was
founded in 1995 by Australian teacher Didi Kalika who was shocked at the plight of so many children who were living on the
streets. She started to help the kids by providing food, shelter and then support and education.
·
The Lotus Centre is now home to around 150 children many
of whom have suffered abandonment, sexual abuse, malnutrition and domestic violence. The Centre offers these children the
chance to change their lives for the better, involving quality education, meaningful activities, counselling and access to
life skills that will hopefully enable them to seek employment and further education once they leave Lotus.
·
The Centre also helps many very poor families with income
projects and food assistance so that poverty does not tear their family unit apart – up to 36% of Mongolians are classified
as living below the poverty line.
·
The Centre is staffed a mixture of volunteers and other staff
members who work for discounted wages. It is a small organisation which relies heavily on donations to fund its superb project
for the street kids in Ulaanbaatar.
·
We aim to donate the car to the Lotus Centre if it makes
it there in one piece. Otherwise we will sell it and give the cash to the Lotus Centre.
The
Wiltshire Air Ambulance
www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk
· The Wiltshire Air Ambulance is unique service in that it is only one of two air ambulances
in the country which work as a joint project with the local police.
· The Wiltshire Air Ambulance is entirely dependent upon public support to raise the £350,000 a year to keep the service
flying. This is only a quarter of the running costs of the helicopter. The remaining three quarters is funded by the police
who use it for various incidents.
· The Wiltshire Air Ambulance is not government funded, nor does it qualify for National Lottery Funding. It is only
the generosity of the public which has kept the helicopter flying for so many years.
· Since it took to the skies, the crews and medics have attended thousands of incidents and saved hundreds of lives.
Sadly almost half the incidents are road accidents but they regularly attend horse riding and sports injuries, industrial
and farm accidents, fires and other medical emergencies.
· We will be doing a local media photo shoot with the car alongside the helicopter in the very near future and we will
put the pictures up here! The Air Ambulance are also very generously allowing our website to be featured on their website
to maximise publicity.
· There will be a photo of the car and the helicopter together on display on the car itself for our journey to Mongolia
Leicester Hospital Charities
Glenfield Heart Hospital
www.uhl-tr.nhs.uk/fundraising
- In 2006 Glenfield Hospital was in the top three hospitals in the country for performing successful heart
bypass operations with a 96.6% success rate for all types of heart operations
- The Glenfield Heart
Hospital in Leicester aims to provide state of the
art equipment to patients suffering from heart conditions. It is also a leading centre for medical research
- Glenfield is also home to Europe’s largest ECMO
(extracorporeal membrane oxygenation centre) where babies and children are treated for reversible acute respiratory or cardio-respiratory
disease.
- Many companies and individuals are trying to help Glenfield raise £150,000 for their
2007 Equipment Appeal which will allow them to purchase four pieces of medical equipment that will make a huge difference
to patient care – we want to help them!
- And they helped Marks Mum with her heart bypass operation!
